Poppi

Brand Audit - Spring 2024

ask: pick a brand and do a deep dive into all they are about and create some future recommendations.

  • Timeline

From just an idea in 2015 Texas to the brand we know and love today!

  • History

It was marketed as a luxury drink, in a fancy bottle with a designer look for a label - they realized this wasn’t going to work and did a whole brand change in 2020 to the iconic “Poppi”

  • Logo

The Poppi logo is very straight forward, simply their name in one of their signature colors, hot pink!

  • Tag Line(s)

They market their tagline as  “fun(ctional) prebiotic soda for all”, but all their cans say,  “be gut happy, be gut healthy”

  • Website

The Poppi website is the perfect example of the brand and their social image": modern symbols/emojis/slang, use lowercase letters exclusively, bright colors, links to social media, use of hashtags. All of this is to appeal to the younger generation and audience they are targeting

  • Advertising

Poppi does an incredible job in the advertising department. Some key areas I highlighted were: social media, commercials, packaging, merchandise, and persuasive communication

  • Brand and Culture

Poppi promotes how their brand is all about a healthy gut, and being a better alternative to soda, and their culture reflects this for the most part. Lately, the brand’s culture has been more centered around gaining popularity and working with near a-list celebrities, but at the root of it all is that they are a gut-health forward brand.

  • Gaps?

Though Poppi claims that there is no “fake stuff”, there are some ingredients that aren’t clearly stated. This leaves the question of what consumers are actually drinking

They also promote gut health, which many consumers take to mean if they drink this soda, their gut will be fixed overnight, when this is not the case. When Poppi says they promote gut health, they mean they have added vitamins to help “clean out” the digestive system, something many consumers also don’t know.

In recent years there have also been a handful of lawsuits accusing Poppi of not being truly prebiotic or claiming it is unhealthy.

  • Future

Poppi is constantly growing and evolving - coming out with new flavors frequently. There are more avenues they can go down, such as making an energy drink line or even exploring the world of mixers or prebiotic powders/pre workouts
